Since 2005, the Thomas Memorial Library Foundation (TMLF) has played an important role in supporting the Library’s mission. Through generous community contributions, the Foundation helps fund programs, services, and special initiatives beyond the town’s budget—ensuring the Library can reach and serve the entire Cape Elizabeth community now and for generations to come. In the months ahead, we’re pleased to introduce the dedicated volunteers who make this possible: the TMLF Board members, beginning with Board President Tyler Patterson.

Tyler has served on the Thomas Memorial Library Foundation Board for 13 years, joining shortly after an initial town vote to invest in the Library’s renovation failed. “I was inspired to join the Board because of my love for knowledge and learning,” Tyler shared. “I saw the early members of the Foundation trying to make a difference, and they believed in the need for Cape to provide an accessible place for knowledge and learning to all our patrons.”
Tyler and his wife, Terri, have lived in town for 17 years. Their two sons, Max and Nate, grew up here and attended Cape’s schools. The Patterson family has long been active in the community, supporting local sports, neighborhood organizations, and the Beach to Beacon. Tyler’s commitment to Cape Elizabeth is rooted in a deep appreciation for what the town offers and what the library uniquely provides.
“Once I saw the full picture of who the library serves, it all came together for me,” he said. “Parents with young children, students, retirees, remote workers, artists, musicians, bibliophiles, lifelong learners… the library truly offers something for everyone, for free! There’s no other non-denominational space in Cape like it.”
When asked what sets Thomas Memorial Library apart, Tyler doesn’t hesitate. “Our library staff and leadership are amazing. They’ve made the library so much more than a building with books—it’s a dynamic hub that supports creativity, learning, and connection.”
He recently attended two events that captured the library’s range and community spirit: a local author talk that explored the writing process in detail, and a Lego Club session where young builders proudly shared their creations. “I loved seeing how proud both the kids and their parents were,” he recalled.
Under Tyler’s leadership, the Foundation continues to play a critical role in supporting programs, services, and special initiatives not covered by the town’s budget. From helping to fund the Library’s renovation to enabling countless community events, the Foundation ensures the Library remains an accessible, vibrant, forward-thinking resource. “While the Town pays to keep the lights on and the doors open,” Tyler explained, “the Foundation supports the Library’s efforts to keep the lights burning bright – advancing its mission and providing knowledge and opportunity for all Cape residents.”
